Meet up at noon in the picnic area at Carey Lake. Everyone brings a sack lunch; we all settle in together to eat our sandwiches and get an overview of the day’s activities, ask questions, get clarification, etc.
After lunch, we do our group activity: finding and painting plant shadows, add something from your imagination to create a story. You can turn your paper so the shadows create an image by linking together, or you can place something within the shadows straight from your imagination; the point is to find creativity and magic in the simplicity of the vegetation. We will all spend maybe 30-45 minutes finding and painting the shadows on a single piece of paper.
Individual pieces: the goal will be to use what we’ve learned from painting the shadow shapes to create a cohesive piece that highlights shadows and perception to create depth and intrigue. Each composition should bring the story you started with the just the shadows to life, or it can create a whole new story. As we go about the first activity, you may find inspiration that you hadn’t thought of before, which could translate to your final finished piece, so there is no reason to limit each person to their initial thought.
Instructors will be available for questions and help creating specific artistic details (using the foggy trick to create depth, layering to create texture and detail, color mixing, brush technique, etc.), but each person MUST create their own composition from their heart using their imagination with the help of the things they see around them (plants, water, trees, rocks, patterns, etc.).
Watercolor Kit Details
At 4pm, everyone will meet back up in the picnic area for a little snack and show-and-tell. Everyone will have the chance to show their shadow paintings with their added imaginative details, as well as their final painting, and explain their thought process and what they were striving to achieve. This way we all learn from each other. If someone doesn’t want to participate in the “show and tell,” they certainly don’t have to, but it’ll be a fun way to see what everyone came up with and help each other gain confidence in our work. No hostility. No criticisms. Just highlighting the things we like or love about what each person did.
