Art, for me, is about connection—between people, places, and moments that often go unnoticed. Working primarily in acrylic, I’m drawn to bold color, texture, and movement as a way to capture both the strength and subtlety of northern Minnesota. My paintings reflect the landscapes, waters, and everyday experiences that shape life on the Iron Range, where resilience and beauty exist side by side.
I believe art should be approachable, not intimidating. It doesn’t need permission or prior knowledge to be meaningful—it just needs curiosity. Whether someone encounters my work in a gallery, a classroom, or a community space, my hope is that it feels welcoming and sparks a sense of recognition or wonder.
Much of my inspiration comes from time spent along Lake Superior, where light, weather, and water are constantly in conversation. That same sense of movement and change shows up in my work, reminding us that creativity, like nature, is something we all have access to—if we’re willing to slow down and look.
I love to teach students that are eager to learn about art. I want them to know all that I know, and for them to go forward in the art world.
Clara Metzer is an Iron Range–based artist with a passion for making art accessible, engaging, and rooted in community. An acrylic specialist, she is known for her expressive use of color and texture, drawing inspiration from northern Minnesota’s landscapes and everyday life.
When she’s not painting, Clara can often be found along the shores of Lake Superior, soaking in the ever-changing moods of the water, or exploring local breweries in search of a great craft beer. These moments of connection—to place, people, and shared experience—inform both her creative process and her belief that art belongs to everyone.
Through her work and involvement in the local art community, Clara is dedicated to fostering creativity on the Iron Range and encouraging others to see art not as something distant or exclusive, but as an essential and joyful part of daily life.
Clara has done art most of her life. Her mediums are acrylic painting, fused glass, stained glass, coffee, painting, alcohol inks, wood burning, acrylic pour, dot mandela and origami.
